Short-Term Clinical Placements

Please Note: 2020 short-term placements are currently on hold due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Welcome Home participates in the training and nurturing of individuals interested in providing midwifery care to low-income communities. Students enrolled in MEAC-accredited midwifery programs can now attend short-term clinical placements with our practice.

These placements are specifically geared toward providing brief, high-volume experience to traveling students as they complete their requirements for the NARM.

Orientation

Welcome Home offers an intensive 40-hour Orientation to our practice.  This training and onboarding process is focused on fostering the clinical skills necessary for safely assisting at out-of-hospital births in our practice.
Topics discussed include:
  • Charting and Documentation for Midwife Assistants
  • Medication Administration for Out-of-Hospital Birth
  • Venipuncture and IV Placement for Midwives
  • Hand Maneuvers for Labor and Birth
  • Immediate Newborn Care
  • Immediate Postpartum Care
  • Fetal Heart Auscultation
  • Specimen Collection
  • Emergency Skills
  • Transfers of Care

Any student midwife enrolled in a MEAC-accredited program may attend Orientation.
Orientation must be attended at least once prior to beginning a clinical placement at Welcome Home Midwifery Services.

Orientation Fees

A $1000.00 fee will be assessed for each time you attend Orientation, and must be paid to hold your place.

2020 Available Orientation Dates

All orientations are currently on hold due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Short-Term Clinical Placements

Students enrolled in short-term clinical placements with WHMS attend and provide all components of clinical care (including prenatal visits, births, postpartum visits, gyn visits, and newborn visits) under the direct supervision of a California Licensed Midwife.

Enrollment in a MEAC-accredited midwifery school is required for short-term placements at Welcome Home, and all students have the opportunity to have their clinical skills and experiences tested and signed off.

We accept one Assistant Under Supervision student and one Primary Under Supervision student per term.
Students may not participate in consecutive terms.

Each clinical placement is 4 weeks 1 day (Placement begins Sunday Morning at 9:00am, ends Sunday Morning at 8:00am).
Our midwifery team sees clients in the clinic 5 days per week. While there is no way for us to guarantee a minimum number of experiences per student, we are a high-volume practice. Students have guaranteed days off each week from clinic, however are on-call for births 24/7.

Our clients provide a number of varied clinical experiences for our students.

Clinical Placement Fees

The fees for each clinical placement are as follows:
$1000 for an AUS placement
$1500 for a PUS placement

Fees Statement

Welcome Home Midwifery Services, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) charitable nonprofit organization. All fees paid by students are used to maintain our organization's basic functions, keep our facility safe, keep qualified preceptors on-site and available, and to further our mission of providing high-quality midwifery care and education to our region. As the only Medi-Cal provider offering Licensed Midwife care in our region, it is of the utmost importance that our organization remain sustainable for the years to come.

All fees include on-site lodging. If you opt for off-site housing, your fees will not be refunded.
Please note housing costs and housing shortages in Sacramento are currently at an all-time high.

Payment Methods

We accept checks, bank transfers and card payments.

Scholarships and Financial Aid

Welcome Home Midwifery Services provides two full student scholarships per year (one AUS and one PUS).
These scholarships are intended for a local-to-Sacramento (lives within 30 mins of birth center) student who is not in need of housing during their placement and who commits to be a Medi-Cal provider upon licensure. This scholarship may be divided if there are more than two applicants who qualify for the scholarship.

Students who are enrolled in a MEAC-accredited program may be able to arrange financial aid through their school.

Private loans may be available for those who qualify through their bank or credit union.

Welcome Home Midwifery Services, Inc. is not enrolled in the Title IV Federal Student Loan Program.

Application

Students are encouraged to submit their application at least two months prior to their short-term clinical placement starting date in order to ensure clinical placement. However, Welcome Home has a rolling admissions policy and will consider later applications when space is still available.

Welcome Home will contact you once the application is reviewed to schedule a video interview.
Please note your application will not be reviewed until we receive all relevant application materials, including your letters of recommendation.

Upon acceptance to our short-term student program, students will be sent the clinical placement agreement (found on the next page) between Welcome Home Midwifery Services, Inc. and the student. The agreement provides information important for the applicant to know before deciding to attend Welcome Home for a short-term placement. If students need clarification on any point in the agreement, they are encouraged to contact the Clinical Director at hello@welcomehomems.org.

Students must read and sign the clinical placement agreement prior to their arrival at Welcome Home.
